We spoke to actor Simon Manyonda about playing John Proctor in Anthony Lau’s The Crucible, playing the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Tell us about The Crucible
The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller set in Salem 1692 and centres around John and Elizabeth Proctor who’s world is torn apart when Elizabeth is accused of being a witch.
Who do you play? What are they like?
I play John Proctor who is known to be a “good man” in society. John ,however, holds a dark secret; an affair with a young girl named Abigail and he has spent the last 8months trying to repair his relationship with his wife Elizabeth and earn her forgiveness.
What attracted you to work on this project?
The director Anthony Lau is an old friend of mine from drama school and we had wanted to work together for a long time. During his casting process I had performed a work in progress of my solo show BLESSED, TRYNA SHAKE THIS CURSE and after seeing the show Anthony felt that I was the right Actor to play John Proctor in his production.
How are rehearsals going?
Rehearsals are now over and they were a joy. Only last night in the pub a few of us were discussing what a great process it has been. Proctor is a beast of a part and so it’s been early mornings and late nights for me. My stamina has certainly increased. I’m was also rehearsing my solo show for the Vault festival on weekends so I’ve been at capacity!
How are you finding being in Sheffield?
Sheffield is a great city. I haven’t had time to explore very much but I look forward to going to the record stores. I’ve been to Public which is a really nice cocktail bar that plays their music on vinyl and they have a great selection.
What’s next for you?
Sleep! I’m writing the rest of my solo show so I’m gonna be in my office finding the words and making music.
What can audiences expect from The Crucible?
If they have seen The Crucible then they should be prepared to leave a pre-conceived notions at the door. This production is unique in its delivery but very true to the roots of the story.
The Crucible runs at The Crucible Theatre Sheffield until 30 March 2024 www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk
