INTERVIEW / Inga Björn and Kristiina Tammisalo on Receptionists

August 25, 2022 by Tom Bailey Leave a Comment

We spoke to the cast of Receptionists, Inga Björn and Kristiina Tammisalo, about their show at the Edinburgh Fringe. Co-produced by Kallo Collective as part of the annual From Start to Finnish showcase, Receptionists sees two highly trained professionals attempt to deliver the flawless customer service promised by a five-star establishment.

Can you tell us a bit about the show?

The setting is in a hotel reception with two receptionists. We play with mundane simple themes making “more from less”. The themes are basic dynamics between two people, cooperation, imitation, conflict, etc., but taken to absurd limits in their details and precision. As the show is based on such pre-linguistic human themes, it is accessible to all ages and cultural backgrounds.

What do you want audiences to take away from seeing the show?

Lenses that show how absurd and silly some mundane things around us are. Just think about the differences in people’s behavior when they think they are being observed or when they think they are not being observed. Lot’s of comedy on that very simple and ubiquitous border of public and private. The show plays with this among other themes.

What are you most excited about for performing at the Fringe?

Looking forward to connecting with live audiences after having a two-year break. Also, can’t wait to explore historical Edinburgh.

You’re performing as part of the From Start to Finnish showcase – can you tell us something that we might not know about Finnish culture?

Finns are known for being quite reserved in their reactions (also applying the less-is-more logic). Back home, we know we’re doing a good job when we hear even the smallest giggle from the audience. It’s great to start the show knowing the connection has already been established: We’ve always heard the first giggles already as the audience walks in.

Receptionists is being performed at the Old Lab at Summerhall between 3-28 August. Tickets start from £8 and can be purchased here.

From Start to Finnish is an annual showcase presented at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe that represents the best in Finnish performing arts. Returning to Edinburgh for its tenth year, From Start to Finnish 2022 features four additional shows: Johnny Got His Gun (ZOO Southside), Kvartetto (Summerhall), Raging Mother (ZOO Southside) and Lion (Assembly).
