Interview / How Eva Von Schnippisch Saved Hollywood

February 3, 2020 by Tom Bailey Leave a Comment

Ahead of the premier of her new show How Eva Von Schnippisch Saved Hollywood, at the Vaults Festival in London on February 19, Theatre Bubble caught up the star herself for a quick low down on what she has planned.

Theatre Bubble: So can you give us a little taste of what we can expect in  How Eva Von Schnippisch Saved Hollywood?

Eva Von Schnippisch: You can expect annuzah action-packed feminist adventure mein liebschen! Zis time I’m in Tinseltown following my dream, so expect heartthrobs, bombshells und gangsters…scandal, sex, drugs and deceit! As usual it’s ein hilarious musical romp… but it’s also poignant und heart-varming ja?! You might even cry ein tear oder zwei (two)!

TB: This is the follow up to your very successful How Eva Von Schnippisch Won WWII what was your high point from that tour?

EVS: Well Edinburgh Fringe vos great, und selling out mein Brighton Fringe dates vos also fab… BUT I sink my high point vos beating over 400 shows und companies to vin ze VAULT Spirit of ze Festival Award 2019! I mean who doesn’t like being acknowledged für your hard verk und all-round bad-assery?! Und ze laurel looks great on mein posters ja!

TB: Apparently your new show as been ‘nipped and tucked’ by the famous ‘Peta Lily’. Did that hurt?

EVS: Ouch ja it hurt!!! But I enjoyed every minute of it! It is ein absolute pleasure to verk vis ein strong female who is at ze top of her game. She pioneered ein whole new genre of clowning; ‘Dark Clowning’ und vos also vun of ze ground-breaking performers involved in shaping Physical Theatre in ze 1980s! She’s basically ein legend… so she can ‘nip und tuck’ me ANY time! ;-)

TB: When you look round at the world right now what parallels do you see to your own life story?

EVS: Vell, visout giving too much of mein story avay… ze #metoo movement und ze Weinstein case in particular are very close to mein heart. Ze film industry has alvays had ze ‘casting couch’ stories embroiled in its history… und fifties Hollywood vosn’t any different. Dirty rats… everyvhere!

TB Obviously the rise of nationalism, and Brexit, is on everyone’s mind right now, as an International cabaret artist who regularly performs int he UK and Germany, have you seen any change for artists over the last few years?

EVS: Ja natürlich! European bookers und programmers are just ein little bit scared of booking acts und artists based in ze UK at ze moment. Vis ze looming probability of extra costs due to possible visas etc… zhey vould rather just stay safe und book European acts. A lot of mein friends have lost ze majority of zheir regular European bookings… I’m just lucky that I have mein German passport.

TB: What are you most looking forward to in your upcoming tour of How Eva Von Schnippisch Saved Hollywood?

EVS: Ze look on ze audience’s faces during ein ‘certain scene’ in ze new show. All I’m going to say is; zis show is BOLD und BRAVE with its content und should make at least ein little stir!

TB: In one sentence why should we come and see How Eva Von Schnippisch Saved Hollywood?

EVS: Come und see mein show because I’m ze vorld’s No.1 spy… und if you don’t… I’ll find out vhere you live! Only joking! Haha! Come because its 60 minutes of non-stop action, emotion und bridges ze gap of Cabaret und Theatre in ein fantastisch vay!

TB: Great! We’re sold – where do we get tickets?

EVS: Wunderbar mein Liebchens! You von’t be disappointed I guarantee it!
