Adam, Eve and Steve is the biblical creation story from the Book of Genesis… with some modern updates. God has created two men; Adam and Steve, who have decided they are very good friends and perfectly happy together until God then invites Eve to join them, complicating the sincerity of the men’s relationship. The Devil does his best to drive the three young lovers apart, tricking them into enjoying a “pomme” (it’s not an apple) from the forbidden tree. Steve and Eve proceed to battle for Adam’s affections.
The cast does a brilliant job of holding the show together as the set is fairly sparse and staging kept simple. Flawless vocals from the three new creations and a rich, omniscient tone from God contrast with the coquettish glee of the impish devil.
Wayne Moore’s music is light and jovial and interlaces beautifully with the story and lyrics written by Chandler Warren. The audience were kept perfectly entertained with just enough double-entendre and fig leaf jokes to sustain them. As Adam descends into moral dilemma we are treated to a rather more sombre tone and some hard hitting messages are gently laid across. Does God still love Steve even though he wants Adam? Is it okay for Adam to like Steve and Eve? We are left with a simple message: love is for everyone.
